Keratea landfill protest reaches Poseidon’s temple

Residents of Keratea, southeastern Attica, on Sunday took their protest against the construction of a landfill near their village to the Temple of Poseidon at Sounio.

The protestors help up a banner demanding that the facility not be constructed at the proposed location as it is near the ancient site of Ovriokastro.

Police in Keratea said that a group of some 50 people set upon a police patrol car at about 1 p.m.on Friday.

They threw Molotov cocktails at the vehicle and stole a police riot shield, which was later abandoned, officers said. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. Nobody was hurt.

Locals have been clashing with police since December, when authorities attempted to start constructing a waste management center near Keratea village.
