Suspected Lebanese terrorist caught in Athens
Greek police have arrested a suspected member of the Fateh al-Islam militant group in the northern Athens suburb of Pendeli.
Authorities announced they had taken Galeb Taleb into custody for reasons of «national security.»
His arrest came 24 hours after Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera identified Taleb as a member of the group, which has alleged terrorist links. It claimed that Taleb, a Lebanese national, was planning a terrorist attack in Greece or a nearby country.
The newspaper also claimed that Taleb is a ringleader of a group of extremists whose members are located in Northern Europe, Germany, France and Bulgaria.
Police said that its counterterrorism unit had been monitoring Taleb’s movements for some time and that they decided to arrest him because of fears that he would flee the country.
Authorities also revealed that another suspect, Mohammed Mousa, who Corriere della Sera identified as Taleb’s predecessor, is also in custody.
