Second day of disruption in Athens due to snow

Snow and strong winds continued to cause problems in many parts of Greece on Wednesday, including in Athens where schools, ports and some roads remained closed for a second day.

Several islands, including Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, Andros and Tinos are suffering severe power cuts as a result of the weather. The Public Power Corporation (PPC) said that it could take until Friday to restore power to some parts.

Parts of the mainland and some areas of Attica have also been left without power after more than 24 hours of snow and gale force winds. PPC said that anyone experiencing problems should call 210.92.98.100.

Schools remained closed in many northern suburbs of Athens for safety reasons and roads through the mountains of Pendeli and Parnitha were also closed to traffic.

Ferries are not leaving the ports of Lavrio and Rafina but a limited service has begun from Piraeus.

However, public transport workers in Athens have called off their 24-hour strike for Wednesday so they can help commuters make their journeys.

Weather forecasters expect the conditions to ease by Wednesday evening although snow will continue to fall in northern Greece. However, drivers and pedestrians in Athens have been warned to look out for ice on Wednesday and Thursday.
