Debt-ridden businessman, 52, kills self

A 52-year-old businessman was found hanged at his home in Anogeia, Crete, on Thursday – the latest in a rash of suicides on the island linked to worsening financial problems.

The man, who was not identified, was found by his brother on Thursday morning at his home in Anogeia in the island?s prefecture of Rethymno. There were no reports of a suicide note being found but police did not appear to be treating the case as a crime.

The apparent suicide is the 20th on the island this year.

The Athens News Agency quoted neighbors as saying that the businessman, who had a small aluminum manufacturing business, kept his mounting debt problems to himself so as not to worry his wife and son.

Klimaka, a social services group providing support for the homeless and depressed, has reported a large increase in calls to its telephone hotline by people considering suicide since the onset of the economic crisis last year.
