Fresh concerns about Lake Karla pollution
Local authorities in Thessaly are ringing the alarm bell over the state of Lake Karla, Eleni Liatsou, the mayor of Riga Feraiou, told Kathimerini said on Friday.
In a letter to Environment Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou, Liatsou, speaking on behalf of other concerned local groups including a body tasked with the management of the lake, called for ?measures as fast as possible to combat the pollution of Lake Karla.?
The reaction from local authorities came after a study by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki found elevated levels of pollution pouring into the lake, which was replenished in 2009 after being drained in the 1960s, from the Pineios River and irrigation canals that spill agricultural and industrial waste into the lake.
The letter demanded an action plan to save the lake in conjunction with an environmental study to assess the magnitude of the problem.
?If we delay any longer, we will have an environmental monstrosity on our hands,? Liatsou wrote in the letter.
