Temperatures to soar above 40C

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) issued a heatwave warning on Tuesday, forecasting temperatures as high as 42 degrees Celsius in parts of the country over the next two days.

Thessaly, the eastern mainland and the eastern Peloponnese are expected to be the hardest hit by the heatwave, though temperatures are expected to be only 1 or 2 degrees below the maximum 42-Celsius mark on the islands of the Aegean, where they will reach between 36-38 degrees on Tuesday and 38-40 degrees on Wednesday.

Athens is also expected to feel the heat, with the mercury hovering around 40 degrees Celsius, prompting the Environment Ministry to urge citizens to restrict the use of cars and machinery with high carbon emissions.

Temperatures are expected to drop by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius as of Thursday morning, though the HNMS said that they are expected to rise again as of Saturday.
