ATM would-be robbers flee scene

A group of four perpetrators used a sledgehammer in an effort to remove a bank ATM from the wall in the entrance to a supermarket on Pireos Street, a major Athens thoroughfare, in the early hours of Monday, police said.

But before the would-be robbers could finish the job, a resident?s call brought police to the scene and the suspects fled in a stolen van. Police traced the vehicle a few blocks from the attempted robbery but were still seeking the hapless perpetrators late Monday. According to official statistics, the number of robberies reported in Attica has increased by 8 percent.
