Woman, 32, hangs self after arrest on shoplifting charge
A 32-year-old woman hanged herself in a prison cell in the western port of Patra on Sunday after being charged with shoplifting, police said.
The woman — the mother of a young child — had been taken into police detention after the owner of a clothes store in the city center reported her for allegedly having tried to steal three blouses.
While the police were contacting a local prosecutor to determine whether the woman should be transferred immediately to court or released pending trial, the woman used the blanket in her cell to hang herself from the bars, police said.
An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy.
