Five detained for alleged debts of 2.7 mln euros to state

Police said on Monday that they had arrested another five entrepreneurs, in Attica, Thessaloniki and Rhodes, suspected of withholding a total of 2.74 million euros in value-added tax from the state.

The five are a 46-year-old plasterboard manufacturer from Peristeri, northwestern Athens, a 54-year-old retailer of electrical appliances from Thessaloniki, the 84-year-old managing director of a four-star hotel chain on the island of Rhodes and two building contractors on the island, aged 36 and 34.

The largest debts are allegedly held by the younger contractor and the hotel managing director, who reportedly owe 958,000 and 950,000 euros respectively.
