Army medic traced in Durban

A 63-year-old military doctor, alleged to be linked to a trial-fixing ring and to have helped secure exemptions from military service for several entrepreneurs and actors, has been arrested in South Africa, police said on Saturday.

The doctor is believed to have fled to Durban after becoming implicated in a trial-fixing ring involving former judges, lawyers and a cleric. According to the charge sheet, the 63-year-old issued fake medical certificates to secure the release from custody of suspected drug dealers who allegedly paid members of the trial-fixing ring to get them favorable treatment in court.

An international arrest warrant had been issued against the medic, who was traced by police in Durban in cooperation with Greek authorities.
