Bomb damages justice minister’s office

A home-made explosive device detonated shortly after 11 p.m. on Tuesday night in the political office of Justice Minister Miltiadis Papaioannou, causing minor damage but no injuries, police said.

It appears that there had been noone at the office, which is located on the fourth floor of a building on the corner of Akadimias and Voukourestiou Streets, when the blast occurred.

Earlier in the day Papaioannou had ordered an investigation into how six inmates at Athens?s high-security Korydallos Prison managed to obtain a pistol and several knives used in a botched escape attempt from the institution on Monday night.

According to sources, the likeliest scenario is that the six — convicted kidnapper Panayiotis Vlastos and five suspected members of the Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire urban guerrilla group — obtained the pistol with the help of a prison employee.
