Ex-mayor denies embezzlement

Former Thessaloniki Mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos claimed on Tuesday that money-laundering charges brought against him are an attempt to undermine his good name.

Speaking at a press conference in Thessaloniki, the former mayor said that the sum of 1 million euros found in his bank account had come from his own and his wife?s income over the past 12 years and had been taxed.

Charges were launched against Papageorgopoulos after an investigation earlier this year found that 51.4 million euros was missing from municipal funds.
