Snow and rain across central, northern Greece
A cold front of gale force winds and snow on mountains swept across several parts of central and northern Greece on Thursday.
Snowfall observed in many areas of Macedonia, Epirus, Thessaly and Evritania prompted local authorities to advise motorists to use snow chains.
According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) weather conditions are expected to improve by Christmas Eve, before lower temperatures make a comeback on Boxing Day.
Strong winds on Thursday forced ferries in the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio to cancel scheduled departures, while schools in Kastoria, Grevena, Florina and Kozani were closed.
Rains and showers were expected in Athens on Thursday.
