Man arrested over antiquities theft

A 70-year-old man was arrested in Serres, northern Greece, on Friday after police, acting on a tip-off, found him to be in possession of undocumented antiquities.

A search of the unnamed man’s home found 19 ancient and old coins, a ring, a Roman plaque and a section of a marble pilaster, which he had not registered with authorities.

The items were handed over to the Serres Ephorate of Classical and Prehistoric Antiquities for further examination, while the suspect was being questioned by a prosecutor over how these items came into his possession.
