5.3 R quake hits Crete

A moderately powerful earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, jolted the island of Crete and neighboring Cycladic islands at 6:24 a.m. on Thursday morning.

According to seismologists, the quake?s epicenter was located beneath the seabed some 48 kilometers northwest of the island of Santorini.

Based on initial reports, the earthquake bears no relation to seismic activity on Santorini. No injuries or serious damage were reported.
