Detained benefits fraudster claimed to be blind

A 29-year-old man believed to have been fraudulently claiming state benefits for blind citizens since the age of 14 was arrested on Thursday in the neighborhood of Ilion, northwestern Athens.

Although the man has no problems with his sight, he managed to obtain all the required documentation to swindle some 53,000 euros from the state over the years.

Also, according to police, the suspect had been arrested five years ago for robbery.
