Athenians play on the beach at Alimos, on the capital’s southern outskirts, yesterday. Three weeks after severe snowfall wiped out most of northern Greece’s fruit crop, temperatures soared to over 30 degrees Celsius (86F) around much of the country yesterday. In Athens, where the heat exceeded 32 degrees at points, residents converged on the nearest beaches. Today is expected to be slightly cooler.
