Minister briefs ND chief on crime crackdown
Michalis Chrysochoidis, who stepped back into the Citizens’ Protection Ministry earlier this month following the resignation of Christos Papoutsis, told New Democracy’s Antonis Samaras during a briefing that a large-scale crackdown on crime in central Athens is being planned in the coming days.
Speaking at a meeting with the chief of the conservative party in Greece’s two-party unity government at ND’s headquarters on Tuesday morning, Chrysochoidis said that he is in the process of coordinating a large-scale police operation to curb burgeoning crime in the heart of the Greek capital.
“The country needs to safeguard itself against crime, which is constantly on the rise and is creating a massive security problem,» Chrysochoidis said, adding that illegal immigration was a major concern to this end and that Greece needs to «defuse the bomb of immigration.”
“We must take all of the appropriate actions to ensure that Greece is not the country which anyone can enter and commit crimes,» Chrysochoidis said.
The citizens’ protection minister said that a «campaign has started to clean up all illegal activities and phenomena in Athens.”
