In London, for Bromley get off at Pyrros Dimas
Tourists to London this summer will have to brush up on their knowledge of Olympic medalists as Transport for London (TfL) unveiled a special map for the underground, or tube, in celebration of the London 2012 Games.
Among the greats on the Olympic Legends Underground Map — such as 14-time gold medalist Michael Phelps whose name has been given to the main London 2012 Olympic stop of Stratford — Greece is represented on the star-studded tube map by weightlifting champion Pyrros Dimas, who took the gold in Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000, as well as the bronze at the Athens Games in 2004. His name has been given to Anerley station on the southbound East London Line, the stop for the borough of Bromley and two stations after the turnoff for the Crystal Palace soccer stadium stop, named after Athens Olympics gold-winning weightlifter Liu Chunhong from China.
Designed by Alex Trickett, international editor for the BBC sport website, and sports historian David Brooks, the Underground Olympic Legends Map has renamed Stratford International Station Cassius Clay after the American boxer who won gold at the Rome 1960 Olympics before changing his name to Muhammad Ali, Liverpool Street is now called Carl Lewis after the American athletics legend, Oxford Circus is Ian Thorpe after the Australian swimmer, Leicester Square has become LeBron James, after the NBA’s «King James,» and Knightsbridge is Steve Redgrave, in honor of Britain’s legendary rower.
«We love sport, we love lists and we love London, so what better challenge than to select 361 of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen and to fit them on to our iconic tube map,» the designers said in a joint statement.
«There were heated debates and a few late changes of heart, but we are happy with the result: dozens of nations represented, all 2012 Olympic sports accounted for, and Ali and Phelps, two of the greatest Olympians of all time, guarding the Stratford gateways to the Games,» Trickett and Brooks said.
