Publisher held over alleged VAT debt

Media owner Giorgos Kouris has been arrested in Athens on suspicion of not paying a large value added tax bill.

Kouris was taken to Psychiko police station on Tuesday following a request from financial affairs prosecutor Grigoris Peponis.

The publisher told a Skai TV reporter that he was being arrested for a debt of 300,000 euros but that he had already arranged with tax authorities on March 30 to begin paying this in instalments.

Kouris is a shareholder in Alter TV, which stopped broadcasting earlier this year while reportedly owing some 400 million euros. He is also the owner of Avriani daily newspaper.
