Ecologist Greens protest absence of environmental policy

The Ecologist Green party on Tuesday morning staged a rally in front of the Environment Ministry in Athens and distributed free public transport tickets on central Syntagma Square in a bid to put the environment on the political agenda ahead of general elections on June 17.

«Today is World Environment Day but we are not celebrating,» party representative Ioanna Kontouli said.

«We realize how much still needs to be done for the protection of the environment and how much more needs to be undone,» Kontouli said, adding «we will dash any chimeras that promise green growth and lots of cash, sacrificing people and the environment.»

The Ecologist Greens spokesman also accused the country’s main political parties of overlooking environmental issues on their agendas, saying that «the memorandum is not the only thing that is at stake.»

«The protection of the environment should form the framework for a real way out of the crisis… quality of life is not something that should be on the sidelines,» Tasos Krommydas said.
