Ex minister penalized for using cellphone in jail

Former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, who has been in custody since mid-April pending trial for money laundering, has been slammed with a disciplinary penalty for using a cellphone inside Athens’ high-security Korydallos Prison, it emerged late on Tuesday.

The use of cellphones in prisons is forbidden. Sources indicate however that the ex minister and former socialist strongman has benefited from several privileges in Korydallos, where he is being held in the cell formerly occupied by Ephraim, the chief monk of the Vatopedi Monastery, who was also charged with money laundering in connection with a controversial land swap with the state.

The penalty for the use of the cellphone was imposed on the 73-year-old former minister by a disciplinary council.
