Lamia doctor jumps to his death at hospital
A doctor in Lamia, Central Greece, on Monday morning jumped to his death from a windowsill of the city’s main public hospital, despite lengthy efforts by family, colleagues and police to talk him down.
The 64-year-old retired radiologist was ostensibly visiting his mother-in-law who was a patient at the hospital when he stepped out of the window of her fifth-floor room onto a ledge shortly after 6 a.m. and threatened to jump.
Former colleagues, trying to placate him, called his wife and daughter, as well as the police to the scene.
Despite the combined efforts of hospital staff, family and a police negotiator who tried to convince the man not to take his own life for over two hours, he jumped, dying instantly.
Some sources suggested that the man suffered from depression, while others said that he had not received a pension since retiring six months ago and had financial problems.
