Health Ministry warns of high ozone levels

The Greek Health Ministry has advised citizens and visitors in Athens to remain indoors for as long as possible during the hottest part of the day on Monday, due to a high concentration of ozone in the atmosphere.

With temperatures expected to peak by the afternoon at around 42 degrees Celsius and even 43C in parts, the Health Ministry issued a circular advising caution, especially to people with health problems, people with young children and the elderly.

The combination of heat, low winds and humidity pushed the ozone level in Athens to 215 micrograms per cubic meter on Monday, when the acceptable level for people’s health is at 120-180 micrograms per cubic meter.

High ozone levels can cause shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, coughing, wheezing and stinging of the eyes or throat.
