Alonso sees Greek, Italian, Spanish victory in Formula 1 win in Germany
Spanish Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso spoke out in support of southern European countries suffering economic problems as he extended his lead in this year’s drivers? world championship on Sunday when he drove to a flawless victory for Ferrari in the German Grand Prix.
The 30-year-old Spaniard started from pole position and dominated the 67-lap race in style. He came home 3.7 seconds ahead of local hero, defending champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull.
After the race, Alonso said there was something fitting about his victory on German territory.
“I don’t really know politics, but it is true that the situation is not great in Spain — but a Spanish driver in an Italian car, designed by a Greek man is good to win here,» he said.
Alonso?s reference to the Greek on the Ferrari team is with regard to chief designer Nicholas Tombazis, who has been with the Italian firm since 2006.
Tombazis is the son of respected architect Alexandros Tombazis.
