Health Ministry to present payment plan for debts

The Health Ministry will be in a position to present an exact timeline for the repayment of its debts, starting with pharmacists and doctors, Minister Andreas Lykourentzos told Parliament’s welfare committee on Wednesday.

“The political leadership is working to ensure the necessary funding for the healthcare system through the end of the year,» Lykourentzos said.

His statements come as pharmacists and doctors continue their action over unpaid arrears, with the former refusing to dispense medicines on credit to patient insured with the National Organization for Healthcare Provision (EOPYY) and the latter cutting back on their hours this week.

Lykourentzos also urged doctors and healthcare providers to be stricter about over-prescribing, which, he said, can cost the system up to 230,000 euros a day.
