SYRIZA blasts Van Rompuy for snub

The main leftwing opposition SYRIZA on Thursday issued an angry statement following the refusal by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy to meet with party leader Alexis Tsipras when the former arrives in Athens on Friday.

SYRIZA described Van Rompuy’s stance as «a blunder and an insult to Greece’s democracy and people.»

A party statement said that it expected an official answer from the European official, after his spokeswoman conveyed his rejection.

Van Rompuy, who has been one of the most supportive voices regarding Greece’s position in the eurozone, is due in Athens on Friday for talks with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and is expected to meet with the latter’s coalition partners.
