Disabled citizens protest pension and benefits freeze

Disabled citizens took to the streets in Athens, Thessaloniki and several other cities on Tuesday to protest the decision by authorities to suspend the disbursement of pensions and benefits until the details of current beneficiaries have been reexamined as part of a broader austerity drive.

In Athens, disabled citizens gathered outside the main offices of the Social Security Foundation (IKA) while similar demonstrations were held in another 36 cities nationwide.

In the capital, protesters staged a rally culminating at the offices of the Labor and Social Insurance Ministry where they delivered a petition with their demands.

These include the resumption of pension and benefit disbursements, including retroactive payments.
