Murder convinctions in Crete
A Cretan court late on Monday night found two Syrian men, aged 19 and 25, guilty of the murder of a 98-year-old retired police officer in the prefecture of Iraklio in May 2011.
According to investigators, the two men bound and gagged the pensioner after breaking into his home to rob him. The gag caused him to suffocate.
The court handed a life sentence and an additional 15 years to the 25-year-old. The 19-year-old got off with a 20-year sentence due to his age while three more people received smaller terms for complicity.
