Rally organized during vote on budget; more strikes announced
Public and private sector workers will be rallying at Syntagma Square in central Athens on Sunday afternoon as Parliament is set to vote on the 2013 budget later in the night, with the Communist-affiliated PAME union marching at Omonia Square at the same time.
Sunday’s action will be joined by municipal workers, which means there will be no garbage collection, while their union also said that it would participate in further strikes next week.
Workers at the Athens Metro, ISAP electrical railway and tram will also be gathering at 6 p.m. at Amalias Street in front of Parliament to protest the budget, which foresees a slew of public sector spending cuts. The protest will have an impact on services.
Meanwhile, GSEE, which represents public sector workers, announced a three-hour work stoppage for Wednesday, November 14, starting at noon, to coincide with pan-European protests against austerity policies.
Judges have also said they will be extending their protest action to November 21 and lawyers to November 16, while pharmacists announced that they will be walking off the job on November 26 and 27.
