Online system for heating oil subsidy launched

The online system allowing Greeks who qualify for heating subsidies has been launched.

The government will be returning some money to less well-off Greeks after it raised the tax on heating oil to match that on other fuel this winter.

The measures, designed to fight fuel smuggling, has led to a 40 percent increase in the price of heating oil, which currently trades for about 1.40 euros a liter.

Homeowners can apply for the subsidy through the General Secretariat of Information Systems (GSIS) website www.gsis.gr. They need to provide their taxisnet number or tax code (AFM) as well as details about their property.

GSIS will then crosscheck their details with those submitted by heating oil providers and calculate what subsidy the applicants qualify for. The money will be paid directly into homeowners’ bank accounts.
