Municipal workers continue sitins to protest firings

Civil servants on Monday continued holding sitins at hundreds of local and central government authority services across the country to protest newly-approved reforms aimed at slashing thousands of jobs in Greece’s bloated public administration.

Around 2,000 municipal workers staged a rally in central Athens yesterday to protest the changes.

Meanwhile the 12 mayors of eastern Attica have said they will occupy the central Athens offices of the Interior Ministry on Friday to protest impending layoffs.

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis said that a process of evaluating municipal staff should be completed before any employees are inducted into a redundancy scheme.
