Financial inspector adamant on Thessaloniki Municipality embezzlement

Financial inspector Anastasia Tsempera insisted on Tuesday under cross-examination that her assessment that 51.4 million euros had been embezzled from Thessaloniki Municipality while Vassilis Papageorgopoulos (photo) was mayor between 2000 and 2010 was correct.

Defense prosecutors suggested that Tsempera had got her figures wrong but she insisted they were right, explaining how the percentage of cash withdrawals by municipal employees had risen from 5.05 percent in 2000 to 20.29 percent in 2004.

She also said there was ample proof that former treasurer Panayiotis Saxonis handled 21.3 million euros, which is unaccounted for.

So far, one municipal employee has been jailed for embezzlement.
