Couple arrested on kidnapping charges

Police in Thessaloniki arrested a 45-year-old Georgian national and his 37-year-old Greek spouse on charges of allegedly demanding 30,000 euros in ransom from a 36-year-old Greek, in exchange for the sum of 3,000 euros the latter had borrowed from the couple.

According to police reports, the husband-and-wife team held the 36-year-old in a basement at the northern Greek port city’s central food market and demanded the ransom money from his relatives.

The 36-year-old had originally borrowed the money from a third party also being sought by police.
