Police arrest 16 on suspicion of tax evasion
Police arrested 16 people on Thursday and Friday on suspicion of tax evasion.
The amounts owed by the suspects ranged from 32,500, owed by a 60-year-old picked up in Maroussi, northern Athens, to 16.9 million euros, owed by a 53-year-old woman arrested on the island of Salamina.
Five of those detained owed more than 850,000 euros each, while the rest owed less than 270,000 euros each.
A total of 686 people were arrested between January and September 2012 for not paying taxes worth a combined total of 1.3 billion euros, Deputy Finance Minister Giorgos Mavraganis informed Parliament on Friday.
