«We should be concerned about the dramatic disturbance of the planet’s ecological balance,» was the statement made by President Costis Stephanopoulos on the occasion of World Environment Day (June 5). In his speech, the president noted the imperative need «for more developed countries to resolutely engage in tackling the dangers threatening not only our generation, but above all, the ones to come.» And he underscored that «as time passes and the damage to the ecosystem becomes clearer, the more consciences are wakened,» adding that «restoring the ecological balance may be a difficult task, demanding many years of hard work and incessant effort; nevertheless, it is inconceivable for us to accept that man will permit his own self-destruction.»
