Incomes of retired MPs drop by over 50 percent

Monthly pensions have been slashed by 54.7 percent since 2010 for former prime ministers and 51.1 percent for retired deputies, according to data released on Monday by the Finance Ministry. Further cuts are expected as of April 1.

The pension for a retired premier has dropped from 4,679 euros per month in December 2009 to 2,561 euros this February, according to the ministry report.

The monthly pension of an MP currently stands at 1,976 euros, down from 3,866 euros three years ago. The pension cuts are in line with Greece’s attempts to reduce costs in the public sector as demanded by the country’s international creditors.
