Tsipras eyes measures for workers to run failed firms
The main opposition SYRIZA party plans to submit a proposal to Parliament soon suggesting that workers at companies that go bankrupt should be provided incentives to run the firms themselves, leftist leader Alexis Tsipras said during a visit to Thessaloniki on Wednesday.
Tsipras made the comments while meeting with employees at the Vio.Me industrial minerals factory in the northern port city. Workers took over production at the factory earlier this month after their employer was no longer able to pay them.
The SYRIZA leader said their self-management initiative was a useful “pilot scheme” that could be replicated elsewhere to combat unemployment.
Tsipras proposed changes to legislation to make it easier for workers to run bankrupt firms as a cooperative and to ensure that owners’ personal property is seized when their companies go out of business.
