New Greek Communist Party leader slams SYRIZA in first speech

In his first public address as the new general secretary of the Greek Communist Party (KKE), Dimitris Koutsoumbas slammed leftist opposition party SYRIZA, accusing it of “feigning ignorance that the measures of the memorandum are part of the EU’s strategy to bolster capitalist gains.”

Speaking at a public gathering at Pedion tou Areos Park in central Athens on Monday evening to commemorate the April 21, 1967, colonel’s coup, Koutsoumbas – who replaced veteran Aleka Papariga at the helm of the hard-line Marxist-Leninist party earlier this month – suggested that the clash between ruling conservatives New Democracy and leftist SYRIZA plays into the hands of the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

He said that “they are betting on passing measures that are against the people with a SYRIZA-led government and on its quick mutation from merely opportunistic to a new social democratic political formation.”
