Drug-tracking system launched with hiccups

A new system for tracking medicines from supplier to consumer, aimed at saving the state 100 million euros a year, ran into problems just two days after its launch.

According to a Health Ministry official, several medicines were rejected by the scanning system as pharmaceutical suppliers had failed to register them with the National Organization for Medicines (EOF).

cording to the ministry official, the problem is limited to 2 percent of the 600 million packages of medicine on the market. An EOF official said up to 30 percent of all medicines could be affected. Alternate Health Minister Marios Salmas has called a meeting of suppliers and pharmacists on Wednesday to discuss the problem.
