Pangrati shootout leads to officer taking bullet in vest

An exchange of fire between police and a serial pharmacy robber in the central Athens neighborhood of Pangrati late on Thursday resulted in an officer being shot in the stomach though his bullet-proof vest shielded him from harm.

The shootout occurred as the 42-year-old suspect was fleeing his third pharmacy raid in a row. The first holdup was at a pharmacy in Neos Cosmos, the second in Pangrati and the third in neighboring Vyronas. Members of the police’s motorcycle-riding squad DIAS intercepted him in Pangrati.

The officer who was hit by a bullet in the vest was transferred to a local hospital for preventive checks but was reportedly not injured.
