Funds for Athens mosque cleared

The government has approved the disbursal of almost 1 million euros of public money for the creation of a mosque in Votanikos, near downtown Athens.

A total of 946,000 euros will be spent on revamping an existing structure. The outer shell of the building will be kept but enhanced with steel girders and insulation, while gardens and areas for praying will also be created outside the mosque, which will not have a minaret. About 350 people will be able to pray in the mosque.

Four remaining buildings on the site will be demolished and new structures built to house administrative offices, toilets and other facilities.

The decision to release the funds was announced by the Development Ministry on Friday.
