Thessaloniki officials convicted over biker’s death

Two former municipal officials and a civil engineer overseeing the construction of a metro station in Thessaloniki have received suspended prison sentences after being found responsible for the poor state of a road that led to a 33-year-old motorcyclist crashing and being killed.

The court in the northern port city found that the officials, including the former deputy mayor in charge of public works, Vangelis Dimitriou, had failed to ensure the road was fixed after the work had been completed.

Judges said the poor road surface led to the motorcyclist losing control of his bike and crashing into parked cars. He was then dragged under a bus.
