Firefighters battle flames on Chios
Firefighters on Thursday battled a blaze that broke out in the area of Pityos on the eastern Aegean island of Chios as strong winds stoked the flames, making their task that much harder.
Eleven firetrucks and a water-dumping helicopter were being mobilized.
Chios was devastated by nearly a week of wildfires last summer that destroyed some 13,000 hectares of forest and farm land, including vast tracts of the island’s precious mastic crop.
