Pakistani gets recognition for rescue attempt

The surviving member of a group of three Pakistani men who tried to rescue an elderly couple from a car trapped on a railway track in Kryoneri, northern Attica, nearly two years ago is to be awarded honorary residence on Wednesday by Interior Minister Yiannis Michelakis.

Masood Ahmed and his two compatriots rushed to help the trapped couple but an oncoming train crashed into them, killing two of the migrants and the elderly Greeks.

The Athens Academy gave a posthumous award to Hamayun Anwar, 18, and Wakar Ahmed, 32, for their heroic efforts.

Ahmed’s honorary residency comes at a time when racism in Greece is on the rise and the government has been criticized for its stance on irregular immigration and citizenship issues.
