Interim state TV ‘almost set’

A transitional public broadcasting service should be up and running within days, Deputy Culture Minister Pantelis Kapsis said on Wednesday following the announcement of the first 577 staff for the service which is to replace the defunct broadcaster, ERT, until a new permanent institution is set up.

A statement released Thursday by staff who lost their jobs when Prime Minister Antonis Samaras pulled the plug on ERT in June referred to “blatant cases of cronyism” in the 577 hirings despite Kapsis’s assurance that committees were being set up to scrutinize the applications.

Authorities rebuffed rumors on Twitter that riot police had planned to raid a sit-in by sacked staff at ERT’s old premises early Thursday.
