Police make over 70 arrests on Crete in bid to halt crime wave

More than 70 people were detained by police on Crete early Saturday after a large police operation in Tymbaki, near Iraklio, following a wave of break-ins and thefts in the Mesara area recently.

The operation, which involved 60 regular police officers and a squad of riot police, was launched late on Friday.

The head of the local council in Tymbaki, Nikos Papoutsakis, said that residents, particularly the elderly, were concerned by the rise in crime in recent weeks.
