Campsite mulled for farm hands in Nea Manolada

Regional authorities in Western Greece are mulling plans to create a campsite for seasonal laborers in the area of Nea Manolada, southwest of Patra, where mainstay agricultural production is almost exclusively carried out by migrant labor.

“The aim is to offer a solution to the very serious problem of migrant workers’ housing so that we can avoid incidents like that of last spring,” Regional Governor Apostolos Katsifaras said.

He was referring to the April shooting of over 20 migrant workers on a strawberry farm by their foremen, after the laborers protested working conditions.

None of the workers were killed though several suffered serious injuries.
