Moscow sends reconnaissance vessel to eastern Mediterranean, reports say
Moscow has sent a reconnaissance vessel to the eastern Mediterranean amid reports of a likely US strike against Syria, the Russian news agency Interfax reported on Monday.
The SSV-201 Priazovye set sail late Sunday from a Russian naval base in Ukraine with a mission to “collect information from the area regarding the escalating crisis,» the agency cited a military source as saying.
The Russian Defense Ministry did not immediately confirm or deny the reports.
The ministry had said last week that warships would be sent to the Mediterranean to replace some of the Russian ships currently there.
Moscow has insisted that the US does not have evidence that the Syrian regime used chemical weapons in an attack on civilians.
Russia is one of the biggest suppliers of arms to Syria.
