Interim public TV airs first evening news bulletin

The state’s interim broadcaster Public Television (DT) aired its first news bulletin at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The bulletin went on the air two weeks after the service resumed news broadcasts, with a two-hour early morning show, following the abrupt closure of state broadcaster ERT in June.

“The next step is for there to be a radio program,” said Deputy Culture Minister Pantelis Kapsis, who is in charge of overseeing the transition to a permanent public broadcaster to replace ERT.

He said the new service, known as NERIT, would have a board within the next two weeks and that it would begin the process of hiring staff.

Journalists’ union ESIEA accused the government of making illegal hirings at DT.

Hundreds of former employees are continuing a sit-in at ERT’s headquarters in Aghia Paraskevi.
